  • Background Summary: The setting is a winter night in a strip of forest. To be exact a strip of forest that two families the Gradwitz and Znaeym have been fighting over ownership for 3 generations. Even though a court order said the land belonged to the Gradwitz the Znaeym family still belives the land is theirs.
  • Georg Znaeym
  • There you are, you dirty poaching thief!
  • Exposition: Ulrich waits in the woods in search of Georg. The two characters come face to face in a stand-off.
  • Your trespassing on my land!
  • Rising Action: In the middle of the stand-off a tree limb out of no were falls on them. Genre: The genre is naturalism and the irony is the piece of land they are fighting over is what ends up hurting them both.
  • Uh...Oh...
  • CRASH!
  • I'm caught in my own forest. When my men get here you will regret poaching on a neighbor's land.
  • So you're not killed, as you ought to be, but your caught.
  • No, because my men are going to get hear first and release me and role this trunk right on top of you to die.
  • Rising Action: Georg was the first to speak after the limb had fallen on them.
  • No, I can't see anything and I don't drink with an enemy.
  • Could you catch this flask if I tossed it to you. It has good wine in it. One might as well be as comfortable as one can
  • Rising Action: Ulrich offers Georg wine from his flask.
  • I have never thought to do anything else then to hate you. Ulrich von Gradwitz I will be your friend!
  • We have been fighting forever over this lousy piece of forest that can"t even stand up to a gust of wind. There are better things to risk our live over and if you will help me tonight to bury the old quarrel. I-I will ask you to be my friend.
  • Climax: Ulrich and Georg decide to become friends.
