Not Your Typical Maycomb Father
I'm too old for that, son.
An Office Man
A Hero in Disguise
In chapter 10, Atticus is described as old and feeble by Scout. Since he started his life later than others, he does not have the same parent-child dynamic as the other families in Maycomb. This results in Jem not being able to play tackle football with Atticus.
Furthermore, Atticus' employment and hobbies differ from most fathers in Maycomb. Scout thinks that her dad does nothing, but sit in an office. He does not hunt or fish like men in Maycomb do, which makes Scout somewhat ashamed of her father.
When a mad dog makes its way to the neighborhood of the Finch family, Atticus and the sheriff arrive. When the sheriff is unable to take out the threat of the dog, Atticus to the shock of his kids, shoots and kills the dog with one shot, exposing them to the fact that he is one of the deadliest shots in Maycomb.
