While dancing Esperanza notices a boy watching her.
Esperanza got her first job, though she wishes it was something like everyone else. Her first day she is nervous like anyone would be.
But it's my birthday.
Esperanza had an aunt who was blind. But she did not know she was blind until one day she tried to show her a picture in a book she was reading, and she told her she couldn’t see.
All night the boy who is a man watches Esperanza dance. The man watching her scares her.
While with her friend Sally who constantly has boys looking at her, she leaves with one of them, leaving Esperanza alone. She waited for Sally by the tilt-a-whirl.
I love you Spanish girl
Not knowing anyone there she goes and sits on a bench and an older man comes and says hello and talks to her about it being her first day. He then totally invades her space after making her feel welcome and forces her to kiss him because it is his birthday wish.
While at a funeral Esperanza meets these women that ask her what her name was. They tell her that she will go very far and then tell her to make a wish. She closed her eyes and made a wish.
Your wish will come true!
Her aunt used to listen to her poems and encouraged her to do great things with writing. But then her aunt died of the disease she had. She was upset because when she was younger they made fun of her.
Sally never came back for her. She left her there alone which is why those boys went after her and why she got raped because when she called out for her friend she wasn’t there to save her.
They told her that it will come true, but she must come back for the ones who cannot leave so easily. Esperanza is surprised because it’s almost like they knew what she wished without her saying it out loud. And then she never saw them again.
At the end of the story, Esperanza realizes that even though she didn't like her house on Mango Street that is where she comes from. She understands that you can't change your past and who you are because that's what makes you, you.
