  • Jan 20: Barack Obama was inaugurated as the 44th President of the USA.
  • Jul 4: The Statue of Liberty's crown reopens to the public after 8 years.
  • Jul 15 "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince", the 6th film based on the books by J. K. Rowling is released worldwide.
  • Apr 30: The United Kingdom formally ends combat operations in Iraq.
  • "Did you hear about the colored not this morning? One they beat with a tire iron for accidentally using the white bathroom?" pg. 103
  • "The women are tall, short, black like asphalt or carmel brown. If your skin is too white. I'm told, you'll never get hired." pg. 257
  • "I been on the waiting list for To Kill a Mockingbird at the Carver Library near bout three months now." pg.154
  • Skeeter's Hair: It was curly when everyone else wanted straight hair, it showed that she was different and didn't need to be accepted to love herself.
  • Maid's separate bathroom: It was another way for the whites to feel superior and for them to explain why they need to stay separated.
  • Children: The women had them back them because it was the thing to do and since everyone else was doing it, they are decided to follow suit.
  • They were always finding new ways to publish the blacks just to make their lives more miserable.
  • They treat their maids like they aren't real people and then they expect them to never leave and give them the best treatment.
  • They have children and then just have someone else watch other them.
  • Skeeter goes on to start writing a book with the help of other maids to show what really goes on behind closed doors.
  • "That reminds me so much of my maid growing up. She raised me, did you know?"
  • Skeeter is talking to another maid about her old maid that her mom fired without telling her and she wants to find her again.
  • Skeeter goes and leaves that town and starts her life over in something that she loves to do and the book money helped the maids have a better life.
  • "Oh I knew Constantine."
