  • Contrition begins before the celebration of the sacrament. It requires sincere examination of conscience to recall the various ways offence has been given to God by breaking God’s laws. 
  • The priest states the satisfaction to be made. This is called the penance.

  • During the sacrament, the person ‘owns up to’ or states all mortal sinsand regular venial sins. There is no need to confess all venial sins, butonly those for which the spiritual gifts of the sacrament are mostneeded.

  • In the sacrament of Penance, satisfaction has two parts: the penance and the prayer of sorrow.
