  • The community sat in anguish, confusion, and discomfort for the majority of the ceremony of Twelve. This was because Jonas had been skipped for assignments, and anything different caused distress in the community.

  • The Chief Elders skipping of Jonas caused anxiety, anguish, and discomfort in the community. Abiding the rules of the community the chief elder apologizes to her community and Jonas for their discomfort.
  • "'I have caused you anxiety...I apologize to my community'" (Lowry 75).
  • Jonas made his way nervously and apprehensively up to the stage once he was called up. All eyes were on Jonas, and all his previous composure lost.
  • The Elder Chief told everyone that Jonas had been selected, saying how he would be very separate from the community. This made Jonas very confused as to why he was chosen.
  • *Gasp*
  • The community was in shock from the news, Jonas most of all. This was a time Jonas would have to become separate from the rest of the community
  • "'No, I don't. I can't!'" (Lowry 80)
  • Jonas. Jonas.
  • Jonas. Jonas! JONAS!
  • Jonas was still shocked and doubting himself. Despite his uncomfort, the community began to chant his name, as if accepting him to pe their future Receiver of Memory.
