At the start of the chapter, Scout is eager to attend her first day of school. She previously spent her days wishing that she could go to school because she longed to join the other children in their games.
Scout is apprehensive, yet excited about her first day of school. She has been looking forward to attending school for a while now. When they arrive at school, Jem makes sure to tell Scout that she is not to bother him during the day.
Ms. Caroline, Scout's teacher, introduces herself to Scout's class. Scout finds that she is somewhat bored by school and spends the morning butting heads with her teacher. When Ms. Caroline discovers that Scout can read, she becomes upset and ask Scout to tell Atticus to stop teaching her.
