Whitney and Rainsford are on a boat on their way to Rio. They are going to Rio to hunt jaguars. Whitney goes in and goes to bed, meanwhile, Rainsford is smoking his pipe by the edge of the boat.
Rainsford heard three gunshots in the distance and decided to go to the right side of the boat edge - where Ship-Trap Island is - to see what had happened. When he got to the edge of the boat, he dropped his pipe. Rainsford immediately reached down to catch his pipe and fell overboard.
Rainsford swam to Ship-Tap Island. When he got there, he noticed a cabin and a lot of vacant woods. Rainsford went up to the cabin door and knocked, a man named General Zaroff, who claims to have read Rainsford's hunting book, answered. He then introduced Rainsford to Ivan, a former knouter, and told Rainsford about his game of hunting humans.
General Zaroff decided that since Rainsford knew so much about hunting, it would be a fair match for General Zaroff to hunt Rainsford. Rainsford went into the woods and made a complicated trail for General Zaroff to follow, then climbed up into a tree. General Zaroff found Rainsford but decided to let him live for a little longer. Rainsford continued on into the woods and set up a trap near the quicksand and sat behind a dead tree.
When Rainsford heard General Zaroff coming with Ivan and his pack of hounds, Rainsford climbed the tree and jumped into the ocean. Once in the ocean, Rainsford started swimming. General Zaroff let Rainsford swim away.
Rainsford swam around the island and back to the cabin. When General Zaroff, Ivan, and his pack of hounds got back to the cabin, Rainsford was there waiting. General Zaroff congratulated Rainford on winning the game before Rainsford killed him. Rainsford slept in the finest bed that night.
