In the town of Maycomb, Alabama. Jem and Scout Finch are all set for the first day of school, but Scout is nervous for her first day ever at school.
The Teacher, Miss Caroline, is trying to lend Walter Cunningham a quarter for lunch. Walter refuses to accept and Miss Caroline does not understand why. Scout is trying to explain to the new teacher in town that the Cunningham's will not accept anything they can not repay. Miss Caroline feels embarrassed for her attempts as well as for embarrassing Walter and she takes it out on Scout.
Scout is non too pleased that Walter made her and Miss Caroline start off on the wrong foot. She takes out her anger by rubbing his face in the dirt.
Scouts big brother Jem has to pry Scout off of Walter in order to stop the fight. Jem made Scout apologize and assure him she will not fight him anymore. Jem invited Walter over for dinner that day in order to show how sorry they were.
At dinner, Walter begins to pour molasses all over his meal and in utter confusion Scout blurts out "What are you doing?!" Walter puts his head down in embarrassment and Calpurnia is not happy with Scouts actions and orders to speak with her.
Calpurnia explains to Scout that you must be respectful of other peoples way of doing things and especially if they are a guest in your house. Scout does learn her lesson, but she chooses to eat the rest of her dinner alone to avoid facing Walter again.
