Meanwhile, the slave can't stop thinking about his family; his wife, his kids. He knows that he will never see them again, and will never have freedom again.
The slave and Mr. Johnson are outside in the fields and Mr. Johnson is explaining to his new slave what he will be doing for the rest of his life. While they are talking, they get onto the subject of the spread of slavery over the past few months. Mr. Johnson believes that slavery is needed, and the slave thinks the complete opposite.
