  • I am so tired of Presidents expanding their constitutional war powers!
  • First,Truman during the Korean War and now Nixon with theVietnam war. Enough is Enough!
  • Today, October 12, 1973, Congress passed the War Powers Resolution with an overwhelming 238-123 vote.
  •  President can get a 30-day extension to withdraw troops.
  • Oct. 13, 1973
  • Forces to withdraw in 60 days unless Congress ratifies it.
  • The President must tell Congress, in writing, within 48 hours of deploying troops. 
  • Class, tell me what the War Powers Resolution is? It was just passed yesterday!
  • Okay, Mr. President, what do you want to do?
  • Oct. 24, 1973
  •  This act is "unconstitutional and dangerous!" It would take away constitutional presidential powers!
  • I want to veto this act immediately!
  • On Nov. 7, 1973, Congress overrides President Nixon's veto with a vote of 284-135 in the House.  The War Powers Resolution of 1973 is officially in law now!
  • President Reagan deployed the military to El Salvador without reporting to Congress.
  • President Clinton had a bombing campaign after the 60-day time limit.
  •    President Obama sent the military to Libya without congressional approval.
