As Chana's family moved out of their old home and stayed at a new place in the ghetto, thy were confronted by German police who were sorting out the children and the elderly which meant that Anya and her mother had to leave. Jakub tries to hide Anya but is confronted by a problem by Bubbe stating that they will just take someone else in Anya's place.
Chana loses each family member one by one until she is the only one remaining with her escape from Lodz to be compromised and was sent to a concentration camp where she learned the true horror of being a Jew in this time period. The only way she can slowly survive this torture is by playing the violin to the Nazi soldiers.
