Rainsford and Whitney on the boat chatting about ship-trap island. Rainsford then falls overboard while trying to see more of the island and starts making his way towards ship-trap island.
Rainsford finds a mysterious house and approaches seeking refuge. He is then met by Ivan holding him at gun point. Zaroff then enters the scene and disarms the situation. He then proceeds to talk to him about hunting, and of how he is growing tired of it.
Zaroff proceeds to tell Rainsford of how he is hunting new prey., capable of many things, most importantly, reasoning. Rainsford is horrified when he learns this new prey is humans and that Zaroff hunts them due to their ability to reason.
Zaroff tells Rainsford that if he survives being hunted by him for three full days in the jungle, then he will be returned to the mainland. After a close call on the first day, Rainsford realises Zaroff is a formidable hunter and that he was toying with Rainsford.
Rainsford having set a trap, is disappointed to find that it had killed Ivan rather than Zaroff, his intended target. Having failed in killing him with the trap, Rainsford runs and dives of a cliff into the sea below, evading Zaroff and his dogs.
Rainsford, having swam back to Zaroff's house, awaits for Zaroff to return. Once Zaroff returned, Rainsford revealed himself to Zaroff and proceeded to kill him.
