  • Northern states opposed the compromise because they wanted to stop the spread of slavery and it would add Missouri as a slave state, which unbalanced the the Senate to the South's favor.
  • Southern Slave States: Why Did They Support It?

  • Northern states believed that Congress had the power to decide whether or not a new state would be admitted as a free state or a slave state.
