Storyboard Text

  • Innocence
  • When the boys arrive at the island, they are still civilized young boys, and innocent. They enjoy playing and having fun. Ralph finds the conch, which is their symbol of unity and civilization.
  • The boys have meetings, where only the person holding the conch can speak. This represents their attempt to keep civilization on the island.
  • Society
  • Savagery
  • The boys begin their descent into savagery when they begin participating in hunting, and giving sacrifices to the beast.
  • Jack splits from the rest of the group taking many people with him into savagery. This represents Ralph, Piggy, Sam and Eric as the last hope for civilized life on the island.
  • Destruction
  • With the death of Simon, we see the fall of a Christ-like figure, one who knows what is right but nobody listens to. With the death of Piggy, we see a total loss of knowledge and logic, since he was the smartest, and the representation of knowledge in the novel.
  • Loss of Hope
  • When the officer arrives at the island, they finally realize what terrible things they have done, and recognized their descent into savagery.
  • Realization
