Storyboard Text

  • One day in 1841 Dorthea Dix agreed to teach Sunday school in a prison and what she saw changed her life forever. The conditions were horrible and mentally ill weren't given the help they needed.
  • This is horribly WRONG!
  • I'm a turtle!
  •  We don't even have blankets.
  • I owe 27 cents
  • After her first visit she had to know if all prisons were like this. She visited many prisons and was outraged that these people were treated so poorly.
  • Have any quarters, i only need 25 cents to get out of here?
  • There are turtles everywhere!
  • Dix began the Prison Reform Movement and campaigned for better conditions. She took her ideas to the Massachusetts state legislature and got better conditions for the mentally ill.
  • The mentally ill are whipped and people who have dept cannot pay it off because they are locked up.
  • I had no idea, we have to do something.
  • Dix took her arguments to other states and many public mental institutions were created.
  • How do you like it here?
  • It is nice to know that my work pays off.
  • It's amazing, i am beginning to see fewer tutles too!
  • By the time Dorthea Dix Died in 1887, state governments no longer threw debtors in prison. They had even created special justice systems for children and outlawed cruel punishment.
  • The Prison Reform Movement showed that people can make a difference and because of it the prisons today are cleaner and the prisoners are not treated like dirt. Also, debtors aren't thrown in jail.
