Years ago, our great country went through many obstacles to get to the place it is today. After the war, people needed to decide what form of government they wanted, but they didn’t know where to start. From this, The Articles of Confederation were created. The Articles were loose law that gave the national government little to no power. One of many problems was that the government did not have power over the people.
Many things went wrong after the Articles of Confederation was created. In fact, a group of famers who were in debt revolted against the government. These farmers were lead by a farmer named Daniel Shay’s. This rebellion showed the government that something needed to be done about the Articles of Confederation. This rebellion would later be named Shay’s Rebellion.
A group of delegates met together to decide what to do. Federalist were for a more powerful government that was over everyone. Anti-federalist were for more power with the states. As a compromise the delegates came up with the separation of powers. This is where the states and the government have power. They also decided to have three branches of government called Executive Branch ( enforce the laws), Judicial Branch (interprets the laws) Legislative Branch (create the laws). These branches have checks and balances that way the other branches can check and balance the power between the three of them.
Ratification occurs when the constitutional convention took place to address problems to the Articles of Confederation
Another problem that came up was representation for the states called Constitutional Convention. The Virginia Plan wanted representation to be based on population and the New Jersey Plan wanted everyone to get equal representation. A compromise was made called The Great Compromise. The House and The Senate were created from the compromise. The House represented population and The Senate represented equal representation. This way, it is works for both.
The Constitutional Convention took place to address the problems to the weak government that existed as a result of the articles of confederation. The Declaration of Independence occurred in 1776 and was a document that showed America’s Independence from Great Britain. The Three-Fifths Compromise occurred in 1787 and was created to count 3 out of every 5 slaves as people.
Sovereignty is the right to govern. The country is allowed to govern, and states are allowed to as well. The national government has the ultimate power, but the states have power too.
In the end not everyone was happy, federalist and anti-federalist decided to make a Bill of Rights in order to keep the basic human rights in the Constitution. Our Constitution is still in use today and people still refer to the Bill of Rights daily.
