Hello and welcome to They Say I Say, I am your host Breanna Fuehrer. I would like to welcome our guests Michael Pollen author of “Escape from the Western Diet”, and David Freedman author of “How Junk Food Can End Obesity”
They will be discussing their opinions on the American diet and its effects on people. Thank you for joining us.
Thanks for having me.
Of course, I believethat Americans have become dependent on junk food and are turning away fromhealthy food options. If Americans don’t decide to choose healthieralternatives it could result in devastating consequences.
So, Mr. Pollen wouldyou like to share with us your view on the American diet.
Mr. Freedman would you like to give us your view on the matter?
I also believe that the fast food industry could possibly be the solution to the obesity problem in American as the result of their junk food dependency.
Certainly, I believe that the American diet isn’t based solely on junk food, and contrary to what some media outlets would like you to believe you can actually get healthy options from fast food restaurants like McDonald’s.
So Mr. freedman you are saying that you believe that the junk food industry could be a practical solution to the obesity problem in America?
Yes, I believe that fast-food companies could be the best solution for fixing America’s obesity problem. “Popular food producers, fast-food chains among them, are already applying various tricks and technologies to create less caloric and more satiating versions of their junky fare that nonetheless retain much of the appeal of the originals, and could be introduced to go much further.” (511)
So, Mr. Pollen do you have a response to Mr. Freemans’s views on the solution to America’s obesity problem?
I disagree with David,I believe that fast-food companies contribute to the problem and are not the solution, and I also believe that “the food they’re cooking is making people sick”(508). “It is one of the reasons that we have the obesity and diabetes epidemic that we do. (508)
I believe that people should “avoid any food that has been processed to such an extent that it is more the product of industry that of nature.” (424) Buying and eating unprocessed foods is a very viable solution to America’s health problems.Unlike Freedman’s idea that places like McDonald’s are the solution I believe that places like Whole Foods would be a better solution since they offer unprocessed and more natural foods.
Michael, since you disagree with David, and you don’t believe that fast-food companies can solve this problem, then what do you believe the solution to the problem is Mr. Pollen?
