Storyboard Text

  • Welcome to New York, and welcome to the factory! Where are you from? whats your name? My name is Sarah.
  • My name is Penelope, I'm an escaped slave from the south, the work there was hard especially after the cotton gin. I'm just glad women can work now that's why i took up this job.
  • Alright Ladies you have only 30 minutes left.
  • Oh my, i heard about the cotton gin, i assume it helps the work but i know the work in the south is difficult.
  • Oh yes the work is difficult. We worked from sunrise to sunset and sometimes longer, it got so hot but if we slowed down we would get punished... I left a few weeks after my master bought a few of those cotton machines.
  • I cant guarantee that work here won't be challenging, but we don't have slave masters and we get breaks for meals. We aren't allowed to have any distractions,, some ladies bring books but don't tell that to the owner.
  • From what i understand the rules are similar to the plantation i worked on. I think i will fit in just perfectly here. I also heard that women are working but not receiving the pay they deserve?
  • Yes but that is also a secret,, the owner cant know about,, after sunset when we're sent to our rooms i'll show you the posters the other ladies and i have been working on. Also how did you escape?
  • I escaped with Harriet Tubman through the "Underground Railroad" its not a literal railroad, nor is it underground. its a series of pathways or trails to different peoples houses and up to the north. Harriet is so brave for going back hundreds of times but shes saved many slaves. And about the secret, it'll be safe with me.
  • Let me finish up here, i've really enjoyed getting to know you. Would you mind waiting by the door, and ill come get you and show you the room you will be sharing with me.
  • I don't mind one bit, I've really enjoyed getting to know you too!
  • Time is almost up ladies, lets move this process along.
  • Well this is it! i hoped you enjoyed dinner and this is where you will be staying!
