Elmira Prison is a Union Prison controlled by the Union Army. The Occupants were Union soldiers the prisoners were Confederate prisoners of the war.
In 12 months 2,970 of the 12,100 prisoners would die from combination of malnutrition continued exposure to harsh winter weather & disease.
There were many escape attempts only 10 men were successful. Bodies were prepared for Burial at the camp & transferred to Woodlawn Cemetery
In Winter of 1864-65 was lethally cold temperature dropped to -18 F. February storm dumped over two feet of snow.
Reduced rationing began to take it's toll on the prisoners as they reduced to eating rats by march hundreds of men had frozen to death or succumbed to disease.
3,000 men buried at cemetery are unknown.
