The courtroom scene provides the Climax for the play. John Proctor admits to the crime of lechery to prove Abigail is a lier. His wife is brought in to verify his claim and she lies about the affair John had with Abby.

At the urging of Rev. Hale John Proctor falsely confesses to the witchcraft. The Judge wants Proctor to write and sign his confession. It will be nailed to the church. John does not want to be a martyr, therefore, he rips the confession and seals his fate
