  • Mom who's that in the photo behind us? Is it Johan Wolfgang Von Goethe?
  • No honey that is not Johan Wolfgang Von Goethe. Its the famous Thomas Hobbes!
  • Who?
  • Thomas Hobbes was one of the philosophers during the Enlightenment.
  • Ok so when was he born and at what age did he die at?
  • Well he was born in 1588 in England and died at 91 years old in 1679.
  • What was his family like? They had to be amazing if he became a philosopher.
  • Well actually his family was not the best. His father was a unpopular village vicar, but luckily his uncle was wealthy. His uncle helped Thomas with his education throughout his entire life including getting into Oxford.
  • Oh. Well what inspired his philosophy?
  • Two things that inspired Hobbes’s theories and philosophies were religious authority that was against scholastic philosophy, and how he admired the scientific method and mathematics. Both of these reasons helped him display his ideas and philosophies to everyone.
  • Ok then what was his actual philosophy or contribution to the Enlightenment?
  • Wow Thomas Hobbes sound interesting!
  • Hobbes first explains how that human nature is not the best and that humans will always crave for power. He then says that it would be better to keep one single person to hold all the power to because if a group of people took over, the power will be corrupted. He overall supports the idea of one ruler in a democratic government.
