  • The first Punic War was started when Rome wanted the granaries on Sicily that were held by Carthage. Rome attacked Carthage. This was a war at sea and the Romans did not have a strong navy. So they developed the corvus which was a lower-able bridge on a ship. Rome won this war. The Romans got Sicily.
  • The Second Punic war started after Hannible Barca rose to power. He brought elephants with him when he attacked Rome to strike fear into enemy lines. He got to Rome found that the walls around the city were strong. He wandered around the Rome for 17 years. At this time Rome led an attack on Carthage, so Hannible had to return home. The Romans won this war. Rome got Spain.
  • A while later, Carthage began to grow strong again. Rome attacked them because they were afraid Carthage would attack them first. Rome attacked them on their home turf. Rome easily won, and they killed or took all the Carthaginians as slaves. They got part of Northern Africa.
