The Finch family was well known in Maycomb, Alabama. Atticus Finch was a lawyer and a single father with two kids the oldest being Jim, and the youngest Scout.
Tom Robinson is a 25 year old black man who live in Maycomb with his wife and kids. Tom was accused of assaulting and raping Mayella Ewells, and was put in jail. He was appointed Atticus as his defending attorney.
Jem, Scout, and Dill including the whole town of Maycomb gathered in court to see the hearing of Tom Robinson. Everyone wanted to find out if Tom would be found guilty or not guilty.
The trial took place during a segregated and racist time which meant that the whites got seated on the main floor while the blacks were up on the balcony. Jem, Scout, and Dill sat in the balcony with Reverend Skyes, who was a minister of the First Purchase Church.
The victim Mayella Ewells testified and said that she was beaten and raped by Tom Robinson. The extent of Mayella's injuries required a man with the use of both arms but Tom had no use of his left arm because of an accident years prior.
All of the accusations that were made against Tom were not proven with proper evidence which showed that he is innocent and did not commit a crime. Since this took place in a racist time the jury favored Mayelle and her father who happen to both be white, which meant that Tom was found guilt and put in jail for a crime he didn't commit.
