During the 1950's there were a lot of Mexicans, Filipinos, and Americans working in the California agriculture. Due to their hard work, in return they experienced no appreciation. The living conditions of these workers were atrocious. When one had to use the restroom, they had to go outside in a inadequate restroom. These individuals were disrespected, paid very low wages, and worked long hours.
We have been working for 12 hours!!!
Due to this unfairness, certain individuals such as Philip Vera Cruz, Cesar Chavez, and Dolores Huerta took a stand. These heroes came together and formed the United Farm Workers of America. This organization came to achieve miraculous goals.
So much injustice! My knees hurt and I have so many sun burns.
We must do something about this. We need our rights!
The Delano Grape Strike occurred on September 8, 1965 when Filipino workers walked out, and stopped working. This act motivated Cesar Chaves, Dolores Huerta, and Latino workers to get involved in the protest. These protesters would tell civilians to not buy grapes.
United Farm Workers
The grape strike caused a lot of conflict between the growers. They constantly disagreed on certain situations. Every solution that they came up with would backfired due to the strike.
What are we going to do?
Why do I always have to find a solution?
This is all your fault
The Delano grape strike lasted from September 8, 1965 to 1970. This five year strike ended when all California grape growers signed the labor contracts in 1970.
I am proud of us.
With the help of Philip Vera Cruz, Dolores Huerta, and Cesar Chavez, agriculture workers now have better working conditions. However, none of this would have been possible if it weren't for the participation of Filipino and Latino workers in the strike.
Thanks to the United Farm Workers, we love our job.
