Ernesto Miranda has been arrested in Phoenix, Arizona for raping and kidnapping. He has been arrested and brought in for interrogation
Because of the interrogation, Miranda confessed to the crime and although he was not aware of his rights he wrote that he did and was convicted
Although Miranda's lawyer brought his case to the Arizona Supreme Court and argued for him they decided to deny his appeal and uphold the conviction
This case eventually made it's way to the Supreme Court and in 1965 they decided that people had a constitutional right to know about their 5th and 6th Amendment rights
You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to speak to an attorney, and to have an attorney present during any questioning.
