I am afraid of death!
"I'm thirty-nine years old...I've got varicose veins. I've got false teeth" (120) shows he is an anti-hero because he not only lacks physical strength, but also has qualities that put him under the average human (such as the varicose veins and false teeth). Usually authors make their heroes super strong and athletic so youth look up to them and see them as role models.
"With a faint feeling of satisfaction Winston laid the fourth message aside. It was an intricate and responsible job and had better be dealt with last" (38). Hero's are usually amazing extraordinary people, so creating a character that is passionate and meticulous about their ordinary office job is an anti-hero characteristic.
"We are the dead...Not physically. Six months, a year-five years, conceivably. I am afraid of death." (135/136) Hero's are never scared of death or believe they are internally dead because they fight to save others and restore good in humanity, always looking towards the bright side.
