Charlie is 32 years old about to be 33. He has a disability and an I.Q. of 68. Charlie is tested to see if he will be doing the operation, but Charlie doesn't understand what the doctor is trying to tell him. So Charlie thinks he failed the test and he won't become smart, but he is trying to understand because he wants to learn.
Charlie finally beat Algernon in the maze! Charlie is so happy because he is learning and becoming smarter, but he later realizes that his work friends aren't really his friends.
Charlie gets released from work. His coworkers are scared of him because he is smart, so they signed a petition to get Charlie fired. Also, all of a sudden Algernon starts to act weird: anger, refusing to do the mazes, not eating. He is slowing down for such a young mouse.
