It all started one cool summer morning. Isabel has arrived in New York Harbor with her little sister Ruth. The sun smiles down on them. They wait for the instructions from their new owner, Madam Lockton. There, she meets a boy named Curzon.
Go get me water, girl!
I can help.
Curzon takes Isabel to the collect the water at the Tea Water Pump. He then makes an offer for her. If she spies on the Locktons, her new British owners, for the rebels, then she will be set free.
I don't know Curzon, it sound dangerous. I'll have to think about it.
All you have to do is, give me and Colonel Regan any important information you may hear.
While serving Master Lockton, she overhears them talking about plans to bribe the rebel forces so that the Red Coats can get across the rebels river. Isabel listens to the men talk quietly and their plan. She decides that she will inform Curzon about the information.
We have enough money to buy the whole city!
Later that night, Isabel sneaks off to see Curzon. She is as quiet as a fox. She makes it to Curzon's sleeping quarters. "Wake up!" she yells. Curzon wakes up and Isabel tells him about Mr. Lockton's money. "Good job, Country." he says. "Keep on spying and soon you'll be free."
Wake up Curzon! Mr. Lockton is planning to bribe the Patriots!
Later that week, Master Lockton called another meeting. Yet again, Isabel serves Master Lockton during his meeting. While she waits for more directions she overhears what the men are discussing. "We could kill General Washington!" the mayor whispers. Isabel is frozen in fear. She cannot digest the news. "Sign this list." the mayor says. "That way I know I can trust you." Isabel knows she must take the news to the rebels, but how?
I say we murder General Washington!
Are you sure Mayor? It's very risky.
Once, the Lockton's were fast asleep, Isabel sneaks into the meeting room. CREAK. Isabel winces. She cannot be heard. She quickly takes the list off the table. "I've got to get this to Curzon and Colonel Regan!"
