  • French and Indian War 1756: ~Called the "Seven Years War" ~Marked another chapter in the long imperial struggle between Britain and France ~British got territories of Canada from France and Florida from Spain
  • Sugar Act 1764:  ~Required to pay a tax of six pence per gallon on foreign molasses ~Also listed certain wines, coffee, pimiento, cambric and printed calico, and further, regulated the export of lumber and iron ~ Disrupted the colonial economy by reducing the markets to which the colonies could sell
  • Stamp Act 1765:  ~A tax on all paper documents in the colonies ~British Empire was deep in debt from the Seven Years’ War and looked to its North American colonies as a source ~Colonists insisted the act was unconstitutional and resorted to mob violence
  • Townshend Acts 1767:  ~Taxes on glass, lead, paints, paper and tea imported into the colonies ~ Americans viewed the taxation as an abuse of power ~1770, Parliament repealed all the Townshend duties except the tax on tea
  • Boston Massacre 1770:  ~ British soldiers were being pressed by a crowd and shot at them ~Three people died immediately and two died later of their wounds ~British officer in charge was arrested for manslaughter
  • Boston Tea Party 1773: ~Served as a protest against taxation ~Philadelphia rejected tea shipments ~Threw 342 chests of tea overboard
