Grendel spotted his next victim, the sleeping man beside him. He put his hand out to seize him, but the man's hand came up to meet him, grasping Grendel's hand firmly in an equally strong grip. Beowulf was the name, and he was Grendel's newest nightmare.
They began to wrestle fiercely. Both went at each other with all their might. The outsiders trembled with fear as they heard the shrieks of the monster and the screams of men. Beowulf's warriors rushed to help him, striking with their swords. Little did they know that no iron weapon could wound that beast.
Beowulf wounded Grendel's shoulder, The muscle bursted and his arm was torn off. Grendel screamed and fled the Heorot Hall without an arm. Beowulf was given glory for his strength. He proudly hung the arm of the enemy above the doorway, as a sign for all to see it.
