The new Tsar, named Alexander III, and his finance minister, Sergei Witte, continued to industrialize the country. They brought in Westerners to help make Russia more like Western Europe. Because there were so many new railroads, Peter rode a train to work everyday.
When Tsar Nicholas II took power, there was military tension with Japan. The political problems caused discontent in Russia. Peter and many other workers peacefully gathered under the leadership of Father Gapon at the Winter Palace to present Nicholas II with a petition
Troops began to openly fire at the crowd and Peter’s best friend, Vladimir, was killed. This massacre became known as Bloody Sunday. This started the Revolution of 1905.
