  • The Fugitive Slave Act infuriates the Northerners so nine northern states pass the Personal Liberty Laws

  • This Act infuriates the Northerners and increases tensions between them.
  • The Sack of Lawrence
  • Passing this was like a countermeasure against the Fugitive Slave act.
  • Pottawatomie Massacre
  • Free African Americans and white abolitionists went as far as to help slaves escape north. People were mainly fighting over slavery.
  • Bleeding Kansas
  • A pro-slavery judge deemed the occupants of the town of Lawrence traitors. He sent the local sheriff to arrest them. An armed pro-slavery mob of 800 armed men went to fulfill the request of the judge. They burned down the anti-slavery headquarters and looted many houses. This only increased the tension between anti/pro-slavery groups.
  • John Brown a white abolitionist and his followers went out one night and abducted 5 pro-slavery settlers in Pottawatomie. They chopped off the people's hands and stabbed them with broadswords. This along with the Sack of Lawrence triggered many more attacks in Kansas.
  • Many violent attacks from the pro and anti-slavery groups led to Kansas becoming one bloody battlefield
