  • St. Anne Help me! I will become a Monk.
  • Orientation
  • What does he mean?
  • I don't understand what he's saying!
  • Conflict
  • Martin Luther was born in Eisleben, Germany on November 10, 1483. Before Luther became a monk his occupations included, German professor of theology , priest, composer and scholar. On a stormy afternoon Martin Luther was walking along a country road on the way back to his college. Suddenly, a bolt of lightning hit him near his feet. He cried out in terror to St. Anne vowing that if he survived he would become a monk.
  • Conflict
  • You are no longer apart of the Catholic Church!
  • I can't wait to punish anyone who isn't Catholic!
  • No one will ever read these!
  • In the early 16th-century theologians and scholars in Europe started to question the practices of the Catholic church. This was when the bible was translated into one language which many people couldn't understand. And, Pope Leo X had introduced the selling of indulgences to raise funds for the rebuilding of St. Peters Basilica in Rome.
  • Climax
  • Martin Luther challenges the church
  • I can't believe someone would question the churches practices!
  • Martin Luther was against selling indulgences and so he wrote the "Disputation on the power and efficacy of indulgences" also known as the "95 thesis" a list of questions and propositions for debate. On October 31, 1517 Martin Luther nailed a copy of his 95 thesis to the door of the Whittenberg church.
  • Resolution
  • What should we change about the Catholic Church?
  • Martin Luther was excommunicated from the Catholic Church by Pope Leo X in January 1521. Three months later he was called to the Diet of Worms to defend his beliefs, but said that the way he thought the Catholic Church should run was right. The Index were a list of books including all of Martin Luther's works. The Inquisition was a court set up to punish heretics or other people whose beliefs differed from those of the church.
  • In 1448 Johann Gutenberg created the printing press which had a significant impact on the spread of ideas in Europe. The printing press ultimately played a key role in the success of the Protestant reformation. This was because Martin Luther's ideas on the way he thought the catholic should be run were spread through the printing press.
  • OMG!!! WOW!!!
  • During 1545 - 1563 the Council of Trent also known as the Counter-Reformation articulated the Church's answer to the problems that triggered the reformation and to the reformers themselves. During this time the selling of indulgences were eliminated which Martin Luther and others found repugnant. Also, the Council of Trent introduced rules for Priests to follow.
