The Stamp Act
You are going to jail for refusing to pay tax. I will give you a little time to relax.
British law banning colonists from moving into the Ohio River Valley to the west of the Appalachian Mountains. Said that any Americans already living in the Ohio River Valley had to leave. British were trying to prevent conflict between settlers and Native Americans. Many colonists felt this law was unfair, because they had fought the French and Indian War to gain that land.
Act that was passed in 1764 by Prime Minister George Grenville after he told Parliament to tax the colonists. Helped raise money to pay for the army that still had to continue to keep a standing to protect the colonists against Indian attacks. Happened after Great Britain won the French and Indian War.
The Stamp Act was passed in 1765 because the British Government was looking for new ways to tax the colonists. Required colonists to pay for an official stamp when buying paper items. If colonists refused to pay tax, they could be fined or put to jail.
