  • The ghost of Hamlet's father asks him to take revenge on his treacherous brother Claudius.
  • King Hamlet: "I am thy father's spirit, Doom'd for a certain term to walk the night,  And for the day confin'd to fast in fires " (Shakespeare 1.5.2)

  • Hamlet wonders if the ghost he saw was really his father or the devil.

  • Hamlet: "I need better evidence than the ghost to work with." (Shakespeare 2.2.2)
  • Catastrophe

  • Hamlet kills Polonius through a tapestry after catching him spying on him and his mother's conversation.
  • Polonius: "Oh, I am slain!" (Shakespeare 3.4.24)
  • Hamlet: "A bloody deed- almost as bad, good mother,  As kill a king, and marry with his brother."(Shakespeare 3.4.24)
  • Hamlet berates his mother for getting with Claudius so soon after his father's death  
  • Gertrude: "O Hamlet, speak no more!  Thou turn'st mine eyes into my very soul" (Shakespeare 3)
  • Hamlet reminisces over the good times he had with Yorik the Jester while holding his skull.
  • Hamlet: "Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio: a fellow of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy" (5.1.35)
  • King Clausius, Queen Gertrude, Hamlet, and Leartes have all been killed. Horatio vows to tell their story and mourns the loss of his friend. 
  • Horatio: "Now cracks a noble heart. Good night sweet prince: And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest!" (Shakespear 5.2.17)
