Storyboard Text

  • "The Help" by Kathryn Stockette
  • Hi! My name is Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan, but you can call me Skeeter.
  • I got the name Skeeter from my brother the day I was born. He said I looked like a skeeter
  • The Independant Skeeter Phelan
  • I'm a graduate from 'Ole Miss. I want to be a successful writer despite what my Mother wants.
  • My Strength
  • My biggest strength is being able to see right from wrong and call someone out for being wrong.
  • I got this strength from my maid Constantine. she taught me everything I know.
  • "I was not a cute baby. When I was born, my older brother, Carlton, looked at me and declared to the hospital room, 'it's not a baby, it's a skeeter!' and from there the name stuck." (66)
  • The Conflict
  • "I'll never be able to tell mother I want to be a writer. She'll only turn it into yet another thing that separates me from the married girls." (65)
  • My Goal
  • My biggest goal right now is to get the writing job I've been hoping for.
  • "All my life I'd been told what to believe about politics, coloreds, being a girl. But with Constantine's thumb pressed in my hand, I realized I actually had a choice in what I could believe."  (74)
  • Skeeter Phelan: Determined
  • "Four years my daughter goes off to college and what does she come home with?' she asks. 'a diploma?' 'a pretty piece of paper,' Mother says." "I told you. I didn't meet anybody I wanted to marry,' I say." (64)
  • She just wants me to find a man and get married, but I ain't too worried about it.
  • One big conflict in my life is my mother. We hardly agree on anything. Especially me gettin' married.
  • I'm just trying to focus on my writing career... nothin' else.
  • "He sighs heavily, hands me a thick folder of papers. 'I guess you'll do. Miss Myrna's gone shit-house crazy on us, drunk hairspray or something. Read the articles, write the answers like she does, nobody'll know the damn difference." (86)
  • I've gotten a job to hold for now, but I have to do really well in order to get a good reference.
  • Skeeter Phelan is more determined and independent than anyone in the entire novel. She has great work ethic and always finds a way to break through her obstacles. She's very strong and isn't afraid to state her opinion, stand up for herself, or call someone out for being wrong.
