The McCarthy's, a couple living in Dublin Ireland in 1879. The potato famine was in full effect and due to the McCarthy's being a farming family it was financially destroying them. So John, the 25 year old Husband, had been doing everything he could to keep his family afloat
The situation gets worse as the Johns wife, Anne, becomes extremely ill. Their local doctor informs them that the only treatment for her condition was in America. John plans to leave as soon as they possibly can.
They decided it is best to take a transcontinental voyage to New York and enter the country through Castle Garden. The journey was scheduled to take 8 weeks but due to extreme conditions it took 12 weeks and Anne's condition was getting exponentially worse.
As the McCarthy's arived in Caste Garden they were greated by a Medical officer that was meant to check all incomming passengers to see if they are healthy enought to enter the country. He deemed that Anne was to sick and sent her to a Hospital on Blackwell Island. John was not permited to follow her and had to finish the remainder of the Immigration process without Anne.
The next step for John after getting cleared by the Medical offical was the Registering Department. He was asked for all his information then they asked what his intended location of redifency was. This was something that John had yet to think of and in this moment he decieded New York as that was where his wife was going to be recieving medical treatment so that was where he wanted to be.
The Immigration process for John is alsmost complete. He is now entering the stages where they prep him for the new world he was about to enter. John was in the Labor exchange and as a strong able body young man he recieved many job offers. He accepted a job loading trade ships so he could be as close to Anne as possible.
