  • Introduction
  • This is Wynyard Yacht Club's (WYC) video for the 2015 Holden Home Ground Advantage Grant. This is Leif, and I am Ethan. We are from the small coastal town of Wynyard, Tasmania (Population 5000). Our yacht club plays an important role in the local community, sharing it's equipment, resources and building. WYC members donate their time to teach and mentor anyone from the local community who is interested in learning to sail. In a town with high levels of unemployment, the club offers sponsorship and discounted membership to disadvantage youth and families, to ensure that sailing is accessible to all. This year, WYC was named Yachting Australia's Club of the Year, was awarded Yachting Tasmania's Club of the Year, and were the winners of the Australian Institute of Sport Community Club of the Year Award. WYC is growing rapidly! Not only in membership, but in programs and outreach. WYC now offer sailing programs to local primary and high schools at minimal cost. At a recent sailing class over 70% of the students were going out in a boat for the first time in their lives! (And our town is filled with lots of rivers and creeks and surrounded by the beach!) WYC have "Sailability" yachts, specifically designed not to capsize, and are using these boats to get community members with a range of disabilities out on the water. WYC are also important members of the Volunteer Marine Rescue team, and assist Tasmanian Police save lives, performing crucial search and rescue operations. It is hard to imagine, but Australia's most inclusive and progressive yacht club, Australia's Yacht Club of the Year, are facilitating all of these programs with only a handful of second hand boats! Our tired Pacers were purchased, used, over ten years ago. We are fighting a losing battle keeping our old Pacers ship-shape and sometimes there are long waits for people to get out on the water. On nice days, we resort to extremes to make sure everyone can get out on the water. This is our story.
