  • Vasco Nunez de Balboa was born in 1475 in Spain. His family was not wealthy and he was devoted to discover fortune in the New World.
  • One day, I will become known for a great accomplishment!
  • Around 1500, he joined a Spanish expedition that explored the coast of present day Colombia. In debt ,and fled to the colony of San Sebastain in 1510
  • After he arrived, he came in contact with peaceful Indians. They decided to make him the temporary Governor of Darien.
  • In 1513, Balboa led an expedition of Spaniards and Indians southward across the Isthmus of Panama.
  • While on his expedition over the widespread ocean, he climbed a mountain and came across the Pacific Ocean, which the Spaniards called the Mar del Sur.
  • In 1519, Pedrarias, the official governor of Darien was furious that the people altered his position and made Balboa governor. Because of this, Pedrarias convinced King Ferdinand to have Balboa arrested and beheaded.
