Storyboard Text

  • As Brooklyn and her mother Sara were walking to Sunday school, Sara gives advice to Brooklyn on how to act and be the perfect girl she's supposed to be.
  • Brooklyn's mother expresses in great detail how Brooklyn is to fulfill the role of a perfect girl and wife to her future husband.
  • "On Sundays, try and walk like a lady and not like the slut you are so bent on becoming."
  • Brooklyn remains silent while Sara continues to give her advice. After returning from Sunday school, she ellaborates on leaving no impression of a slut to anyone. A female is destined to act and be perfect for society to not perceive as otherwise.
  • Rather than be a slut, a girl is to behave and look attractive for her husband and for society.
  • "This is how to hem a dress when you see the hem coming down and so to prevent yourself from looking like the slut I know you are so bent on becoming!!"
  • "This is how to behave in the presense of men who don't know you very well..."
  • ...and this way they won't recognize immediately the slut I have warned you against becoming."
  • Even though it is apparent that Sara's advice clearly enforces the idea to not be a portrayed as a slut, there is additional meaning to her advice than just this idea.
  • Alone, Brooklyn rethinks the advice Sara gave her. She realizes Sara's advice was for being the perfect girl that Sara was supposed to be in society. The great and specific details dipicted in Sara's advice were applicable to Sara's own life and her role as a female in society.
  • As Brooklyn was helping Sara make dinner, she reminds Brooklyn to "always squeeze bread to make sure it is fresh."
  • "But what if the baker won't let me feel the bread?"
  • After Sara responds, it was at this moment Brooklyn knew she was no longer the young girl she thought she was.
  • "You mean to say that after all you are really going to be the kind of woman who the baker won't let near the bread?"
  • A female's value to society is belittled due to the expectations and stereotypes from society. A female's role is limited and lacks the ability to find value in oneself.
  • This scene illustrates the idea of a girl or female to never be seen as a slut to society, but also hints at the stereotypical gender roles of females. The stereotypical gender role of females is to look attractive on the outside for their surroundings and husband. A female and potential wife must do what her husband asks of her. Furthermore, the meaning of marriage in society demonstrates for one partner to impose their will on the other and in this case the husband on the wife. A female's role as a wife is to simply act as a care taker for her husband.
  • The end.
