  • John Calvin was a religious leader born in switzerland. Calvin was a law student at the university of orleans when he first joined the cause of the reformation. He believed in following the words of the scripture over what the priests said because the scriptures were original basis of christianity.
  • In the 1500's around the time in 1517 when the reformation begin John Calvin brougt the reformation into the catholic church of Switzerland Geneva. Calvin wanted to set up a theocracy of his beliefs and the religious leaders rule the government .
  • In 1541, he had successful set up the theocracy in geneva, the city government forced all the citizens to attend church serval times a week and had very strict rules.
  • Many people didn't like this in Switzerland so they were put to death for various crimes against the church, such as witchcraft, or being too catholic.
  • Why Calvin did this is because he believed mankind could not control or change anything in this earth life. He thought everything was controlled by god - the past, present and the future. And through certain people were predestined for heaven when others to hell.
  • John Calvin was a principal figure of the protestant reformation. Him, Martin luther, and Henry VII separated the protestantism from the roman catholic church and calvin doctrine and theology created profound changes within the churches.
