John was having an affair with a younger girl named Abigail and here is them flirting in Paris' house. This shows how he is not loyal to his wife and this could ruin his reputation. He is being flirty towards Abigail even though he is married. He admits that he was looking up at Abigail through her window.

He is showing that he is over Elizabeth continuing to believe that their is still an affair going on. For 7 months he has tried to kiss up to her and make her believe that he does not love her. He is being assertive and getting aggravated by Elizabeth accusing of him for still seeing her.

Right after John and Elizabeth's heated fight about John's affair with Abigail. Marry Warren walked through the door from being at the court in Salem and John was not having it. He acts assertive by bossing Marry to tell her she cannot go to Salem. He knows that she cannot fight back since she is his maid and a woman. His 700 acres of land also makes him high handed because it is what makes him seen as a good man in Salem.
When Elizabeth was about to get taken to jail for accusation of witchery by Reverend Parris, John was trying so hard to get her out of the situation and begging to let her stay at home. John was being protective towards Elizabeth because he did not want her to die and he proved how much he loves her. He get Mary to agree to testify at court that all the girls are lying about seeing the devil.
When John is up for execution he tries to decide if he wants to live the rest of his life as a lie or want to die knowing he did the right thing. He knows that he will not be able to live in a lie. His reputation will be damaged and he will feel guilty for cheating on his wife forever.
