In this scene Jing-mei is sick of her mother bossing her around and stands up to her. This changes their relationship forever.
Twenty years later, Jing-mei accepts the piano that her mother gave her.
The theme of Two Kinds is happiness is found in unusual ways.
After her mother dies Jing-mei looks in the seat and finds two pieces she played at the recital. She plays them and feels happy.
The two pieces of music she finds in the bench "Pleading Child" and "Perfectly Contented". These pieces represent Jing-mei as a child then as an adult.
This theme portrays happiness in the story because Jing-mei is happy because of her mother pushing her and how those two music pieces represent her life.
