Storyboard Text

  • After the fall of the Roman Empire in 476 C.E., a new social system had emerged in Europe called Feudalism.
  • Social status plays an important role in Feudalism.
  • We are the Knights!
  • I am the King!
  • We are the Serfs!
  • We are the Lords!
  • Sounds good to us!
  • Lords were vassals to the King.
  • The way the feudal system worked is quite simple. Each social class had a certain relationship with one another...
  • In exchange for military aid and your loyalty, I will grant you fief and supply you with serfs to tend your fief.
  • Similarly, Knights were vassals to the Lords.
  • Deal!
  • We are prepared to offer you food, protection, and shelter for exceptional military service and genuine homage in return.
  • So what do we get?
  • Serfs also serviced their Lord by working on the land, sharing the produce, and paying rent.
  • Food, shelter, and protection.
  • By the end of the 12th century, however, feudalism had gradually slowed to a halt. Due to the increasing complexity of the feudal system--being as though currency had become more efficient to use versus relying on their own military service, resources were limited, and the fact that The Black Death reduced much of Europe's population--the practice grew inefficient.
