One day, a dog with rabies comes into the neighborhood. Atticus comes home with Heck Tate who asks Atticus to shoot the dog. When Atticus was a young man he was called "one-shot Finch." Atticus did not want to brag about his great shot even though Scout wanted to tell everyone.
Mrs. Dubose lives in a house on the way to the business district and she always shouts at Jem and Scout. One day when they were walking by, she yells mean things about Atticus. Jem gets mad and destroys all of her camellia bushes. As a punishment, Atticus makes Jem read to Mrs. Dubose for a month.
Calpurnia takes Jem and Scout to a black church. This church is called the First Purchase because it was bought with the earnings of the first freed slaves. Reverend Sykes welcomes them because he knows their father. Reverend Sykes collects money for Tom's wife because she cannot find work with her husband being accused of rape. The money is collected in a tin can.
Dill comes to town one night, and hid under Scout's bed. Scout mistakes Dill's hand for a snake and it scares her. He has run away from home because his parents weren't paying attention to him.
At about ten o'clock, Atticus leaves the house and takes the car which is unusual for him because Atticus walks everywhere. Jem, Dill, and Scout follow him and see him outside the jail, reading a newspaper. A group of men are there to torture Tom.
Jem and Scout come to watch Atticus and hear the verdict. They don't think about it but they sit with the black crowd because there is no where else to sit.
