Storyboard Text

  • Jacques Cartier was born on December 23rd 1491. In Saint Malo, France
  • In 1534, he was sent by King Francis I to the New World in search of riches and a new route to Asia . This was his first voyage
  • Off you go!
  • He set sail and arrived 20 days later. There, he was credited for the find of Prince Edward Island. He came back to the king with two captured Native Americans.
  • Land- hoooo!
  • On his 2nd voyage, they travelled up St.Lawrence River and set up camp, then, in winter with almost half of his men dying from Scurvy, they seized some Iroquas Cheifs, he then came back with information about a new river going west. 
  • Go! Go! Go!
  • On Cartier's third voyage, he travelled to Quebec in 1541, there, he went against his orders and sailed to France with what he thought was diamonds and gold. He no longer recieved any royal commisions.
  • He died at age 65 on September 1, 1557, during an epidemic, possibly of typhus, though many sources list his cause of death as unknown.

  • Cartier’s three expeditions along the St. Lawrence River would later enable France to lay claim to the lands that would become Canada.
