Did you know that things as big as factories and little as not picking up after your pet can affect watersheds and the fresh water we use? I think that it is really important for people to know how us humans affect our water.
A watershed is any land that allows extra water from run off run into nearby water sources. This means that pretty much all land is a watershed. These watersheds can easily be polluted, and lead to water pollution of fresh water sources.
Paul is walking his dog and refuses to clean up after it. While Paul is walking his dog, he finishes his water bottle and tosses it on the ground instead of in a waste bin. What Paul doesn't know is that, although he may not be by any water sources, runoff can still pick up the trash he left behind and carry it into valuable water sources.
Like I said in the beginning, factories are a big part of water pollution. Water is a solvent. This means that water can dissolve substances in air and carry them as pollutants to streams and even groundwater.
Another big factor in water pollution is erosion. Humans can increase these chances of water pollution by erosion by mining, cutting down trees and over-grazing farm animals on local watershed territory.
over all, humans have a very big impact on what happens on our watersheds and how clean our water is. It's best that we just clean up after ourselves, and try to accomplish more with keeping our water clean.
