Think about it. Arthur wrote the play during a time of Communism. He was comparing the witches to people we know to be communist yet still living in our society. We were dealing with a time of an "all-out battle between Communistic atheism and Christianity".

We were dealing with a "national feeling of fear and frustration that could result in national suicide and end everything". The people were scared that if they were accused of being witches they would be hung so they decided to be on the churches side out of strong fear. and the time period te Crucible takes place the church was seen as the government.

All of you are right. I wrote the play during a strenuous time. I was worried about the war and the way the government was working. False claims of people constantly being made so they got thrown in jail. Communism was threatening the U.S. and it was scary
