I stand upon the spot where I should have stood seven years ago. I hid it from man and walked among you. I am a sinner!

During a parade, Dimmesdale noticed Hester and Pearl and called them up onto the scaffold with him. Chillingworth tried to stop him, but Dimmesdale had made up his mind. The crowd around them didn't know what to think.
Dimmesdale turned to the people and explained that he was a sinner and had lied to them. He "tore away the ministerial band from before his breast". Underneath was an A, carved into his skin.
Dimmesdale looked triumphant, then collapsed. Pearl kissed him and Dimmesdale and Hester said their parting words. Then Dimmesdale died.
